Media Exchange
A place where film and television creators can sell the distribution rights to streaming platforms in exchange for the money they need to develop their projects before they’re produced.
Before actual “production” takes place (filming), film makers need to “develop” their projects, wheere they write the screenplay, cast the actors, hire a director, find a distributor, etc. Once the project is “developed”, they get a loan for the “production” budget (tens of millions of dollars), and pay it back with ticket sales.
The problem is, getting the money for “development” is the hardest part. Before, screenwriters and producers would go to studios and pitch their projects, dealing with middlemen and gatekeepers along the way. If they can’t get meetings, their project doesn’t go anywhere, no matter how good the idea is.
With the Hybrid Media Exchange, creators can sell their projects directly to the streaming services before they go to production, giving them a cash infusion to pay the screenwriters, pay the attachment fees for actors and directors, and eventually get a bank loan for a big production budget.
Because the films aren’t made yet, these are called “futures”, just like commodities like corn, wheat, or porkbellies where the products haven’t been delivered yet, they’re still growing in the dirt or being harvested.
